Boiler scrappage scheme details

December 2009 saw the announcement from the UK government that starting from January 2010 they will introduce a boiler scrappage scheme which will provide a £400 rebate towards replacing energy inefficient boilers rated G or worse with energy efficient boilers. A total of £50 million has been pledged by the government so far which means approximately 125,000 boilers will be replaced. However, there are 4.5 million households that currently have boilers which would qualify under the government boiler scrappage scheme so it will pay to apply for the scheme as soon as possible. Additionally, some of the larger energy companies are launching their own schemes and further details of these will appear below as soon as they are available.

UPDATE : The government boiler scrappage scheme has now ended. Others exist however.
UPDATE : The Npower boiler scrappage scheme has now launched.
UPDATE : The British Gas boiler scrappage scheme has now launched.

To qualify for the government boiler scrappage scheme your boiler must be G rated with an efficiency of 70% or less for you to qualify under the current rules. If you qualify, you will be able to claim a £400 rebate towards the cost of a new energy efficient boiler.

In summary, you will likely qualify for the government boiler scrappage scheme if:

1. Your boiler has a G energy rating or worse
2. The boiler is in working order and is the main boiler used to heat the home

To apply for the government scheme you need to ensure that you have the following details to hand :

i) Your full name.
ii) The address of the property you wish to claim the boiler scrappage rebate voucher for.
iii) The make and name of the boiler being scrapped.
iv) The company name, address and contact details of the installer carrying out the work.
v) The type of replacement boiler to be installed e.g. gas, biomass.
vi) Confirmation that you have received a quote or visit from the installer to carry out the work.

Once you have all the information, you should contact the Energy Savings Trust by phone on 0800 512 012 in order to claim the £400 boiler scrappage allowance from the government.

The government scrappage scheme has now ended. Please choose from one of the scrappage schemes provided by British Gas or Npower instead.

British Gas boiler scrappage scheme

British Gas has also introduced a boiler scrappage scheme which operates under the same criteria as the government boiler scrappage scheme and also offers a £400 rebate off the cost of your new boiler.

Npower boiler scrappage scheme

Similarly Npower operate a boiler scrappage scheme that will also provide a £400 rebate towards a new energy efficient boiler if your current boiler is more than 10 years old.

* The good news is that you can apply for both the government boiler scrappage scheme in conjunction with the British Gas or npower boiler scrappage scheme which would mean that you could get a potential rebate off the cost of your new boiler totalling £800!
